Müfide Kadri as Teacher

Müfide Kadri is the first female Muslim painting teacher in the Ottoman Empire. She also gave painting lessons in the palace to Aliye Sultan, daughter of Abdülhamid II (Reign 1842-1918).

Education

Müfide Kadri started taking private painting lessons at the age of 10. Her teachers were Osman Hamdi Bey (first museum director of the Ottoman Empire), and the painter Halil Paşa. Her oil painting teacher was Salvatore Valeri, a teacher at the Academy of Fıne Arts (Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi )

She also took piano, violin, kemenche (a three-string bowed instrument), and lute lessons.

Contributions to Society

After her death around forty of her works were donated to the Ottoman Painters Society (Osmanlı Ressamlar Cemiyeti). The first solo exhibition of Mufide Kadri's works was mounted in 1912 from this collection. The revenue generated was donated to the Ottoman Painters Society.
